Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg)

Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) is also known as Australia antigen. This test is positive if you have been infected with Hepatitis B virus. It is a serious liver infection and may become chronic, meaning it lasts more than six months. Having chronic Hepatitis B, increases your risk of developing liver failure, liver cancer or cirrhosis. This test is used not only for detection of the virus but also used to follow up these patients & monitor the effect of treatment.
