Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is of 4 different types namely 1, 2, 3 & 4 of which only 1 & 2 are found in humans. HEV is transmitted through contaminated drinking water specially due to poor sanitation & personal hygiene. Infection is of short duration of about 2 to 6 weeks. Symptoms include fever, jaundice, itchy skin, pain abdomen & enlarged liver. This infection becomes serious in pregnant women specially in 2nd & 3rd trimesters of pregnancy & can lead to liver failure. This test indicates exposure to HEV and past infection.
