HOMA-IR, Insulin Resistance Index

HOMA-IR is a group of tests that calculates if you are resistant to the action of insulin. Pancreas releases the hormone insulin which tells the cells in your body to allow sugar from the blood to enter the cells to form energy. Insulin resistance does not allow this action with the result that your sugar levels rise in the blood. You are at a risk of developing insulin resistance if you are obese; age more than 45 years; have a family history of Type 2 Diabetes; smoker; take certain medications such as steroids; suffer from sleep apnoea, fatty liver disease & polycystic ovaries. Lifestyle changes are required to reverse insulin resistance.
