Rubella / German measles is a contagious viral infection that may cause mild or no symptoms in most people. Symptoms include fever, headache, skin rash, stuffy nose & red itchy eyes. However, it can cause serious problems for unborn babies whose mothers become infected during pregnancy. These babies develop Congenital Rubella syndrome with growth delays, cataract, deafness, heart defects & problem with mental development. Vaccination with MMR (Measles-Mumps-Rubella) vaccine gives adequate protection. This assay tests IgG antibodies against Rubella. Presence of IgG antibodies indicates past exposure to the virus or immunization.
